In fact I was surprised not to find any dead animals deep in the bowls of this thing.

Once again, sure to document the whole tear down, I slowly addressed each screw and found the pieces easily came apart. I could now see the mechanics behind this whole contraption. It seemed simple enough. You pull the draws and they actuate levers, and in turn those levers lift little doors allowing air to move out through them, giving the sound you want - hopefully.

(This shows what is essentially the "valve cover" for the organ reeds. That seam along the left is a door which opens to allow air out. It is one of the pieces actuated by the draws. The taped seam on it is cracked and ineffective and needs to be replaced, however, I can't seem find a good replacement for it. The holes that run along the spine there are for a series of small pegs. The pegs reach down to the doors on the reeds and are depressed by the keys. The system's simplicity is remarkable.)

Down the line... the harmonics garage door

The felt here needs to be cleaned up, otherwise it looks pretty good. The reeds are all shiny and the wood on both the door and the floor is dry and solid. All I need is a vacuum cleaner.

Door Closed & Door Open

But before all that, the opening of doors, the moving of air, the creation of sound (per above paragraph), can happen the sound has got to get going in the first place and thus we dig deeper, into the reeds.
I discovered that the basic structure is on par with a 25 cent harmonica. A number of reeds all lined up and each sealed off, impervious to the air that is being pumped into the chamber below. That is until you depress on of your keys topside. This key pushes down upon a small dowel - about an inch long, if that, and rests in a tiny socket, aforementioned - and this dowel moves the small wooden slat out of the way allowing the air to rush though, in turn vibrating the reed to it's maximum potential, just like it's father would have liked.

Underside of "reed board" where the slew of slats sit.

A closer look - see the springs that hold the slats in place. One of these springs was off and causing problems. It was corrected. The wood down here is soft, really soft, kind of cheap, almost like a balsa. I'm curious if that's a sound thing or a less expensive thing or a high end thing? I'm curious as to the rational behind construction material here.

Another look - quite close now. May 7th presented a nice opportunity quickly enough.

I evaluated the piece and then looked into reconstruction. With my tools readied and went to work. I had a new sheet of felt that was to be cut into pieces to reline the blocks and bottom piece, then new brass screws to make the whole backside look fancy, and lastly a new piece of leather to really do up the final touches. A little wood glue and some scissors to get the job done and I was in business.

I removed a collection of original hand forged nails and was pleased to be able to reuse them again. "I'm looking for a paint to last. Something to replace a paint from an old organ I've got..." I probably tried to get them enough information without making them think I'm trying to brag about some pet project I've got... I don't know if it worked or not. They sold me some paint though. I rode back home and pulled out the piece, newly cleaned, still sitting on the chairs inside where I had last placed it to dry. I then took it outside and readied my things.

Taped off the sections I wanted to stay paint free and somewhat 'original' and went to town. They were so perfectly crafted and yet so simple. Each one was perfectly placed and was gently lined with a small piece of felt which, for the most part, was numbered and needed to be replaced. At the time this was a very empty space and the organ sat right at the entrance like any glorious addition to a household should be presented, free to be seen by anyone who might duck in. HA! not here.. but hey, I felt better about myself.

This puppy was dirty. I never got a good understanding on where it came from or how long it had been in storage but it seemed like the varnish was actually made of clay. As I explored the properties of this ancient church rocker I took with me a small rag and after only several inches of bushwhacking, my morsel of rag had no chance of color retention before the end of my trek through the apparent bowels of this machine, I had to double back twice to renew the strength in my dust abatement program and finally discovered a set of screws and as all tinkerers know, you NEVER overlook screws and the secrets they hold together.
From the sky came the cold grey American Forged Steel of interchangeable driverbits, with the purity of lovemaking screw and driver became one and with the thrill of an Audi transmission the two moved. Counter-clockwise until the screw lifted, tapered, and released it's noble grip, finally giving up all mechanical advantage in the end, still, generic, lying at the base of my organ. I felt as if I had plucked this fish from the sea and watched as it lay gasping for air until it ceased to pulse, alone, cold, dead. And I without grief, my only thoughts of where I would put the next one as it too would gasp and then lay cold, and when I had to many, where then would I hide my fish. I should get a bucket. So I did.*
With a number of screws out and perhaps one panel off, I was thrilled. Thrilled with my new gift to myself, thrilled with my new project, mostly thrilled with myself for acquiring it and being that much more amazing for having it. I closed up shop for the night and quietly waited for my roommate, Sean, to get home so I could gloat and share my grand plans for the rebuild, but mostly just gloat.

*I apologize for my extensive pause and seemingly out of control detailing of the extraction of the first screw.

Freecycle Told Me So and The Volvo Made It So.

Wednesday, January 12, 2005 - The posting read:

"[freecycle] OFFER: 1880ish Pump Organ"

"Pump organ is in need of restoration.
We are in the Broadway/Kolb area. 207-xxxx.
Would appreciate removal ASAP. Thanks!"

I stopped reading and immediately replied.

"I would love to have this! I can pick it up as soon as you'd like. - John."
(or something like that).

Thrilled, I couldn't wait for a reply. I had to be the first.. I just had to be. I think I might have even called. After some negotiations on pick up time I was at their doorstep checking the address and a little giddy. With no idea of what I was going to get I just imagined the world, an antique in need of some dusting with gilded-gold siding and snow white ivory keys. They answered the door and we proceeded through the standard salutations of internet friends meeting for the first time. They had me pull around to the ally where they'd show me the goods. Two seconds later I was behind their house. They opened their gate and showed me to a small wooden leaning shed where they unlocked the door and swung it open.
Inside, just past some stacked wood I thought I saw the twinkle of a dying instrument. The meager murmurs of a music maker muted in the dark recesses of storage. Here I was, THE LIBERATOR! Hooray for me, the HERO! My host stood for a second, as if to evaluate, for the first time, the poor condition of his storage unit. Perhaps he was condemning himself for such unethical treatment of such a worthy instrument. Ashamed, he pointed and said, "so, here it is." Ashamed, I replied back in my most made up aire of enthusiasm for the day, "Cool!" He had pointed right at the stack of wood I had previously thought superfluous, perhaps a part of an in progress bird house, perhaps the remains of an old bed, but certainly not a finely tuned instrument found in churches and estates. There is was, right in front of me, and I was doubtful of my ability to undertake and I was ashamed of it. As was the deal I agreed to take it, hiding my doubts beneath my reemerging enthusiasm for the beginnings of a new project, the beginnings of adventure.
We began to move it out of the shed and it's structure slowly emerged. Now I began to see through the dirt and dust and past the weathering, into the soul of the art, this was once a wonderful working instrument and it had the will to be so again.
Once the bulk of the organ was out in the open then came the symptoms of much needed work. In the form of several bundles of parts, independent of the initial furniture, these apparently went somewhere, but where my host didn't know. The adventure was growing in my head and the glory right along side it.
Now came the final trick - transport.
We squared it up and took a look. The rear hatch of my Volvo tapers in toward the top. It's also smaller than the internal cubic space, so if we're able to get it past the entry, we're good all the way in. Sizing both up we took some time to orient and the heaved. The organ went up on end and then over backwards. We set it on the bumper and then up on the rear. It was going to be close. We pushed and the organ grabbed the rubber around the hatch opening at the corners. With a little rub of the fingers and a tweak of the wrist the frame ducked down, the opening yawned and the two became one. Bundled parts, a bulky framed non-working organ, and one antique organ song book and I guided the hatch to a gentle close, shook hands, promised good things, and saw my feet to their respective pedals. They were happy to have it gone and I was happy to have it. I think it worked out perfectly.

I later recalled my host telling me that he had picked it up as a project to work on but never got around to it. Now I was even more determined to start the rebuild. But as all such things must go, tear down before rebuild and meticulous records would be my only chance to find perfection and glory.
